Abstract
This study examines the strategies of social and communication organization represented by wikāla in Imami Shiʿism and daʿwa in Ismailism during the Abbasid era. It investigates how these institutions responded to communication constraints and political and social pressures, while sustaining religious authority and shaping Shiʿi communities. Using a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach, the research draws on historical, hadith, and biographical sources concerning early Imami and Ismaili history. The findings indicate that both systems established intermediary networks linking centers of religious authority with followers, thereby mitigating barriers to direct communication and helping preserve communal cohesion. Nevertheless, differences in historical circumstances, leadership models, and patterns of communal development produced distinct organizational strategies. In Imami Shiʿism, the wikāla network primarily maintained contact between the Imam and followers, transmitted funds and messages, and organized an existing community. Ismaili daʿwa, while maintaining ties with religious leadership, also pursued expansion by recruiting adherents, extending geographically, and progressively organizing new communities. Thus, these institutions should not be treated as equivalent forms of religious representation. Rather, they constituted historically specific responses to the challenges of sustaining Imami authority and organizing Shiʿi social life, emphasizing, respectively, communal continuity and communal expansion and reproduction.
