Political participation, as a Mega Concept, encompasses numerous dimensions, forms, derivatives, and requirements, which manifest differently among various social groups and individuals depending on cultural, social, and technological conditions.
In this study, drawing on numerous texts and articles and using the meta-synthesis method with a comprehensive and holistic perspective, we examine the quality and various dimensions of the impact of the New communication and information technologieson the forms, dimensions, and components of political participation. By screening and operationalizing the seven stages of meta-synthesis, a total of 35 articles were ultimately selected as the final statistical population for analysis.
The final results obtained from the meta-synthesis of the content and findings of the selected texts indicate that there is a relationship and correlation between various Internet-based media and virtual social networks and political participation, and that the level of political participation has increased. Moreover, the types, dimensions, and forms of political participation have been transformed under the influence of these new technologies, such that we observe the growth of unconventional, latent, informal, and online/virtual forms of political participation (new forms of participation), and in some cases an increase in electoral participation (traditional and formal participation).
